Alterations

Exceptional tailoring for the clothes you already own.

Maintaining the clothes you already have is the most sustainable thing you can do! Our alterations service is all about preserving, improving and extending the life of clothing through exceptional workmanship.

Our speciality is men’s formal wear, but our experience extends to couture, stretch fabrics, casual clothing, leather, homeware and much more. If our skills and equipment can be of service, we are delighted to help.

Every garment entrusted to us represents an investment of time, money and personal significance, so we treat it accordingly. Our alterations look as though the garment was made that way in the first place.

We pay close attention to construction, proportion, fabric behaviour and finishing. Where possible we improve the construction and preserve the ability to alter the garment again in the future. We don’t cut fabric unnecessarily, and we don’t create needless waste.

Why The Green Tailor?

With more than a decade of experience in bespoke tailoring and alterations, The Green Tailor brings the standards of a bespoke atelier to every garment we work on. Our experience spans traditional men’s tailoring, couture, delicate fabrics, stretch garments and much more, supported by specialist machinery and a deep understanding of garment construction. We don’t simply alter clothes to fit — we understand how they were made, why they were made that way, and how to change them without compromising their character or integrity.

What does it cost?

Every alteration is different, so the final price depends on the garment, construction and complexity of the work. The following prices give you an indication of our pricing for some common alterations:

Shortening a jean or chino hem : R350

Taking in the waist of a jean, chino or trouser: R350

Tapering and shortening a suit trouser : R600

Shortening a jacket’s vented cuff with buttons : R650

Taking in the sides and centre back of a suit jacket : R650

Taking in the sides of a shirt : R350

Some garments require more work than others, particularly when they have complex construction, delicate fabrics, lining, unusual finishing or previous alterations.

If your alteration isn’t listed, please contact us for an indication.

The best way for us to assess your garment is to arrange for a fitting. We’ll examine the garment, discuss what you would like to achieve, and explain the alterations we recommend. Together we’ll decide what works best for your fit, style, and budget.
