The Lord can indeed work in mysterious ways, and it was certainly an odd set of circumstances that brought about the birth of The Green Tailor.
Although I always loved fashion and had a natural talent for sewing, I believed it would remain a hobby until I was forced to make it a business in 2014.
The Green Tailor Turns Four!!
Before all of this fashion what what I was an archaeologist. Although I miss some parts of archaeology (there’s nothing as fun as an excavation) I really don’t miss the bureaucracy that comes with large institutions.
My career in academia came to an abrupt end when I attempted humour in a post-it note to a colleague. A disagreement then escalated and I needed to find a new job like…really fast!
On 1 Jamiary 2014 was unemployed, but very well dressed so hey whatever.
And thus began my new life as an International Fashion Icon!! I started my first blog back in 2013 already (omg first blog blush). And here I am somehow after 4 years…
I began as many new designers do, sewing anything and everything that anyone will pay you for! From dresses and sweat pants to laundry bags. But my true love (and real success) was with menswear.
After three years of this chaotic endeavor to build a business, I’d been spectacularly unsuccessful in finding a single employee, and was beyond exhausted from sewing every last seam myself. Taking a long walk in the Fish River Canyon helped me think over not only what I personally wanted from the business, but more importantly what consumers really wanted from me.
This saw the birth of The Green Tailor in its current form, and 2017 has been a spectacularly successful year. I’ve managed to systematise a lot of the business, making our alterations service beyond excellent. I’ve also managed to build a small team (myself, Olga and Antontio) who are all dedicated to providing an excellent service and growing the business.
But none of this would have been possible without the support of our clients, who have been so wonderfully patient and loyal. I’ve really enjoyed all the new faces I’ve met over the years, and am really excited to show our appreciation with this braai.
All are welcome on the 30th November at the Studio (625 Levinia Street, Garsfontein) from 4pm where there’ll be plenty to eat and drink, and lots of fabulousness all around!!
If you’re on Facebook you can pop over to the event there
I hope you’ll all feel welcome to attend, and I hope to keep serving you with this gift that God gave me. In case you’re wondering, ‘naai’ is the Afrikaans word for ‘sew’ but (to my endless amusement) is also a slang word for ‘sex’ ;)
The Studio is at 625 Levinia Street, Garsfontein, and open every Thursday from 10am to 10pm. You can also subscribe to this blog by hitting the follow button, and join the monthly newsletter here for fashion scandal and awesome designs.
If it wasn’t for my precious pity-commissions you’d be sunk by now. But it’s fine; don’t mention it.

Wow, good for you. Crossing the 4-year threshold is an accomplishment. As for the red jacket in your last photo, where can I find it?
